Millions of people worldwide, especially young people, falsely conclude that they must choose between science and faith, not knowing that in Unity they can say yes to both. Below is a very brief essay that illustrates how our Unity movement enables us to readily accept and celebrate the discoveries of science. ‛Unity’s best kept secret’ is that, in Unity, we can heartily embrace both faith and science.
I am a professor; in 2009, I presented a paper at a conference on bridging science and religion that was sponsored by the Unity Institute and held at Unity Village. After presenting my paper, I spent some time alone in the Silent Unity building contemplating what I could do to help others who do not know about Unity to realize that bridging science and religion was one of the original purposes of Unity’s founding. The thought occurred to me there that I could write a brief, booklet length, piece that could be shared with Unity centers to help them reach the millions who accept science and who are looking for a spiritual home. It is a gift from me to be used, or not, as each center chooses.
Unity’s failure to communicate its acceptance of science caused my wife, a science teacher, and I to overlook Unity when we were looking for a church in which to raise our two sons. We finally learned this truth about Unity when our younger son was 16. Although very autistic, he then earned the Fillmore Youth Award and benefitted greatly from his one year in YOU, but we regret that our sons missed so much by not growing up within our wonderful movement.
A famous scientist predicted that the long range prospects for religious movements will be most favorable for those that can fully accept the findings of science and do so poetically. In Unity, we can do that beautifully.
